How Is a Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculated?

Grade point average is the calculation of a student’s average performance over a specified period, such as a teaching period, an academic year, or over the duration of the program. The calculation is based on the grade, the grade point value associated with that grade, and the unit value of each course.

The grade point average (GPA) is calculated as follows:

The sum of (grade points x course unit values), divided by the sum of the course unit values.

The grade point for each grade is as follows:

1. Met specified assessment criteria to required standard.

2. If final GPA is less than 4.0.

3. Satisfactory performance in final module (assessed by SAIBT Board of Examiners) or pass in supplementary assessment.

4. Failed to meet specified assessment criteria to a required standard in a non-graded module or supplementary assessment.

5. Student withdrew from the module (without penalty) on or before the date prescribed by the Academic Director for withdrawal without a failure being recorded.

6. Student withdrew from the module after the date prescribed by the Academic Director for withdrawal without a failure.

7. Student has been withdrawn from a module as part of an intervention strategy.

Example 1:

~ The unit value of all SAIBT Diploma courses across Stage 1 and Stage 2 = 4.5.
