Accommodation

Moving to a new country can be daunting, especially when you have to choose somewhere to live without knowing anything about the city.

Homestay

Homestay provides you with the opportunity to live with an Australian family. You will be introduced to Australian culture and have the best opportunity to use English in everyday situations and to develop language skills more quickly. Most host families are located within
20 – 30 minutes by public transport from CELUSA/SAIBT. There is a minimum stay of five weeks. Homestay is also a good option for short term accommodation as it allows you to settle in quickly with the help of your host family and you can take time to look for suitable permanent accommodation.

What to Expect in Homestay

  • A warm, caring family environment
  • A bedroom with bed, wardrobe, and a desk for studying
  • Bathroom and laundry facilities
  • Towels, pillows, bed-linen and blankets
  • Nutritious meals
  • Negotiated use of kitchen and telephone
  • Guidance, support and encouragement with language practice, studies, planning
social activities and adapting to life in Australia
  • Information and assistance with using public transport

Homestay Costs

In 2016 the approximate cost of homestay is A$250 per week including breakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday and all meals on weekends and holidays. Part board is also available at A$160 per week with no meals provided.

International Student Residences

Student residences provide excellent facilities in an environment that is good for study. Generally, students are required to sign a lease for a minimum stay of one SAIBT semester (14 weeks) however some residences prefer a six month minimum stay. Both full board (including all meals provided), or part board (no meals provided) options are available.

Facilities in student residences:

  • Private bedroom and bathroom
  • Barbecue areas
  • Common rooms
  • Indoor and outdoor recreation facilities
  • Laundries
  • Communal TV room and videos

Indicative costs of student residences vary from approximately A$315 per week for full board (three meals per day provided) to around A$135-A$210 per week for part board (no meals provided). For full fee information, please refer to the SAIBT website: www.saibt.sa.edu.au.

Student Apartments

There are many student apartments situated in the city centre close to CELUSA/SAIBT.

These are normally fully-furnished apartments that are only rented to students.

Apartments usually include kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, television, living and study area, and heating. Single, twin and double accommodation is available.

Most apartments are available for a minimum term of 12 months.

Student apartments vary in cost from approximately A$200 to A$430 per week (fully furnished and inner city location). Extra charges apply for electricity, gas, internet access, telephone connection, photocopying, faxes, voicemail and laundry facilities.

Further Information

For more information about accommodation, including how to arrange accommodation, please contact the CELUSA/SAIBT Accommodation Officer: celusaibt.accom@unisa.edu.au and visit www.saibt.sa.edu.au/accommodation

It is a good idea to book temporary accommodation for the first few weeks that you are in Australia. This will give you time to find your ideal permanent accommodation.

If you plan to find your own share accommodation off-campus you may wish to arrange for temporary accommodation after you arrive. Temporary accommodation is normally in the form of shared dormitory or hostel accommodation, or a motel or hotel which you pay for on arrival.

If you choose to wait until the last minute to book your accommodation, you may be left with limited options.  These options may also limit you in terms of your move-in date. Check the following options for more information about temporary accommodation.
